Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon — 2 Day Tour
Our Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon two day tour is a great option if you want to escape the city and explore the entire south coast of Iceland. The south eastern corner of the country has some of the most stunning sights, including Iceland’s largest glacier and highest mountains.
The two day tour gives you the time to take in the impressive Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls, as well as the black sand beach and basalt columns at Reynisfjara. You get up close and personal to the astonishingly beautiful ice formations of an outlet glacier of the enormous Vatnajökull Icecap, hiking up to get views of the Falljökull ice fall, and in winter passing through a blue ice cave. You will be mesmerised by the giant icebergs floating around the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. You will be able to spot some curious seals swimming around the lagoon, as well as large crystals of ice from the same lagoon washed up on the nearby Diamond Beach, sparkling on the black sand. You will also be able to explore endless moss covered lava fields from the devastating Laki eruption and be in awe of the incredible Fjaðrárgljúfur* gorge.
During winter months there’s a chance you’ll be able to see the northern lights dancing across the sky, whilst the summer lets you experience the endless sun filled nights in the countryside.
This tour includes accommodation and a delicious buffet breakfast at the comfortable Lilja Guesthouse, which has modern rooms and private bathrooms. You will rest easy, all ready for another day exploring this amazing part of Iceland.
The south east of Iceland is one of our favourite areas. Book now to find out why!
After leaving Reykjavik we head straight for the impressive Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, which you can walk right behind for the ultimate view, but the waterfalls do not stop there. Next is the powerful Skogafoss waterfall which is a sight you will not forget.
From here we drive on to Reynisfjara where we will look over the amazing black sand beach and basalt columns and stop for lunch at the Black Beach Restaurant. After lunch we will continue east to explore Fjaðrárgljúfur*, where you can see the impressive forces of nature that have eroded this spectacular gorge. Further east, we will drive past the mighty Vatnajökull icecap, where we will be dwarfed by Iceland’s highest mountains.
We spend the night at the new and incredibly comfortable Lilja Guesthouse, resting up for another action packed day. We stay in their deluxe rooms, all are recently finished with modern fittings and private bathrooms. Dinner from the kitchen at Lilja Guesthouse is always delicious, with the chefs taking advantage of the fresh, local Icelandic produce. With favourable conditions in winter, we will hunt for the magical northern lights.
We start the day with the delicious buffet breakfast (included) from Lilja Guesthouse. We then go to one of our all time favourite locations in Iceland, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. We will be mesmerised by the giant icebergs floating around this incredible lagoon and by the washed up icebergs that glisten like crystals down at ‘Diamond Beach’.
From here we drive toward Skaftafell stopping for snacks to keep us sustained for the glacier hike. We then head to one of our favourite outlet glaciers of the mighty Vatnajökull. You will get up close and personal to the the astonishingly beautiful blue ice formations during our hike on the Falljökull glacier, and in winter go within the glacier in a blue ice cave. This is always a highlight of any trip to Iceland.
On our way back to Reykjavik we will stop to explore the moss covered lava fields from the devastating Laki eruption in 1782, where your guide will shed light on the history of Iceland’s explosive past. Further stops will be made for dinner, before arriving back in Reykjavik around 9pm.
*Fjaðrargljúfur gorge can become closed during certain seasons due to wet, frosting and thawing conditions. The environmental agency of Iceland determines access and will close access in order to allow the ground to recover and to make repairs where they can. In these cases we add in some of our other favourite stops along the south. There’s endless amazing sights for us to explore in South Iceland.
